She met her husband, Martyn, in 1976 and married in 1978. She has three children and two granddaughters.

While her children were young she held key positions on several village committees including the Home and School Association, the Scout Group, the Playing Fields Association and Ferriby Ladies. She also took part in door-to-door collections for Lifeboats and Christian Aid during those years.

Her husband runs his own engraving business and occasionally makes plaques for opening ceremonies, which have been unveiled by various Royals. He has made several for the Queen including one for the Humber Bridge when it was opened in 1981.
